Understanding Before Memorising

The smarter way to pass your theory test.

Meet your driving theory test coach

Hi, I’m Matt Wallace

I’m a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor and Advanced Driver. I created Driving Theory Test Coach to give learners the clear, patient explanations they often cannot find in revision apps and practice-question banks.

How I became a driving instructor

A career built around driving, road knowledge and helping people.

My background

Driving has been a major part of my working life

Before becoming a driving instructor, I spent fifteen years working as a London black cab driver. That meant driving every day in one of the busiest and most demanding road environments in the country.

It taught me the importance of observation, planning ahead, reading the actions of other road users and remaining calm when the road becomes busy or unpredictable.

I later became a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor and an Advanced Driver. Today, I work directly with learners who are developing both their practical driving skills and their understanding of the Highway Code.

Why DTTC exists

Why I created Driving Theory Test Coach

I kept meeting learners who were working hard but still struggling to pass their theory test. Many had completed hundreds of practice questions, yet they did not feel confident when the wording changed.

The problem was not always a lack of effort. Often, the information had never been explained in a way that made sense to them.

This became particularly clear while helping my own son, who is dyslexic. Simply reading more pages or completing more mock tests was not the answer. The information needed to be broken down, explained clearly and connected to real driving situations.

That experience became the foundation of Driving Theory Test Coach.

02

Why I created DTTC

To give learners understanding, not just another bank of questions.

03

The mistake most learners make

Recognising an answer is not the same as understanding the rule.

A better way to revise

Practice questions should test learning, not replace it

Practice questions are useful, but they work best after you have learned and understood the subject.

When learners rely entirely on mock tests, they can start memorising the position or wording of familiar answers. That can create the impression that revision is going well, even when the underlying rule is still unclear.

The official test may ask about the same rule using different wording or place it within a different road situation. Understanding the reason behind the answer makes it much easier to respond.

That is why my teaching follows a simple principle: understanding before memorising.

DVSA Approved Driving Instructor

Professional experience teaching the knowledge and skills learners need to become safer drivers.

A deeper understanding of observation, planning and managing risk on the road.

Former London Black Cab Driver

Fifteen years of professional driving experience in a busy and demanding road environment.

Experience With Different Learners

Patient support for nervous learners and people with dyslexia, ADHD, autism and learning difficulties.

Experience that matters

Theory linked to real driving

The theory test is not simply an exam to complete before learning to drive. The knowledge supports the decisions you will make every time you use the road.

My experience allows me to connect Highway Code rules to real situations and explain what a driver should be looking for, thinking about and preparing to do.

This is especially important for hazard perception, where success depends on recognising how an ordinary road situation begins to develop into something requiring action.

My promise to learners

Clear teaching without judgement

Struggling with the theory test does not mean you are unintelligent, lazy or incapable of becoming a safe driver.

People learn in different ways. When one explanation does not work, repeating it louder or asking someone to read the same page again is rarely helpful. The explanation needs to change.

My aim is to provide a calm place to learn, where topics are broken into manageable sections and questions can be asked without embarrassment.

Whether you use my course, free content or private coaching, I want you to feel that the theory test has finally started to make sense.

04

My promise to every learner

Patience, honest guidance and explanations that respect how you learn.

An honest approach

No unrealistic promises

I will never claim that a course or coaching session can guarantee your theory test pass. No honest instructor can make that promise.

What I can provide is accurate guidance, a clear revision structure, practical explanations and support designed to improve your understanding and preparation.

Passing still requires your time and effort. My job is to make that effort more focused, productive and manageable.
