The theory test is a driving exam that assess a driver’s knowledge of the rules of the road, driving laws and safe driving practices. It’s the first step towards getting a full UK driving license and must be passed before booking the practical driving test.
The theory test has two parts:
Multiple choice: Assesses your knowledge of the rules of the road and The Highway Code
Hazard perception: Tests your ability to identify potential hazards while driving
The theory test covers the following 14 subject areas:
Attitude
Documents
Hazard Awareness
Incidents, Accidents and Emergencies
Motorway Rules
Other Types of Vehicle
Road and Traffic Signs
Rules of the Road
Safety and Your Vehicle
Safety Margins
Vehicle Handling
Vehicle Loading

To pass the theory test, you need to score at least:
43 out of 50 in the multiple choice section
44 out of 75 in the hazard perception section
You’ll receive your results as a letter at the test centre after you’ve completed the test. You’ll have two years to pass the practical driving test after passing the theory test. If you don’t pass the practical driving test within two years, you’ll need to retake the theory test
