How do you know you have a two-second gap?

You do not estimate the number of car lengths. You measure the time between the vehicle ahead passing a fixed point and your vehicle reaching the same point.

Choose a fixed point

Use a sign, bridge, tree, lamppost or another stationary object beside the road.

Watch the vehicle ahead

Begin counting at the exact moment its rear passes your chosen point.

At a normal speaking pace, say the phrase shown below. It takes about two seconds.

If you reach the point before finishing, you are too close. Ease back and check again.

The important detail: the two seconds is a time gap, not a fixed number of metres or car lengths. At higher speeds, you travel farther during those same two seconds, so the physical gap naturally becomes larger.
Change the gap with the conditions

Two seconds is only the starting point

The minimum two-second gap assumes you are alert, your vehicle is in good condition and the road is dry. Poor conditions require much more space.

When you are moving

Use a time gap: two seconds in good conditions, at least four seconds when wet and much more when icy.

If traffic stops in a tunnel

Leave at least a five-metre physical gap between your vehicle and the one in front. This is different from the moving two-second rule.

Separation gap is the space you deliberately maintain while following another vehicle. Stopping distance is the distance your vehicle travels after a danger appears. The theory test may ask about both, so it is important not to confuse them.

What makes stopping take longer?

Fatigue, mobile-phone use and lack of concentration delay your reaction and increase thinking distance.

Alcohol and drugs

Alcohol, illegal drugs and some medicines can slow reactions and affect judgement.

Speed

A small increase in speed produces a much larger rise in braking distance because more energy must be removed.

Water, ice, loose material and poor road surfaces reduce grip between the tyres and road.
